7 ways to improve your cognition!
Today we worry about dementia and alzheimer’s more than ever. It seems to be all around us and we probably know someone or have a family member who has dealt with this. Here are some quick, concise ways to help improve your cognitive skills and help prevent degeneration.
Eat right. This seems fairly obvious but the keys here are to lower your sugar intake and increase your good fats.
Exercise. And focus on balance and proprioception exercises. Get a Bosu ball on Amazon for these.
STOP multitasking. What?! Yes, multitasking distracts the mind and is less efficient. It’s better for your brain to focus on a singular activity.
Sleep. Almost all of us need more sleep or better quality sleep. Make sure you can breathe well through your nose in order to get the best quality. If not, seek out a sleep specialist or someone who is an expert on sleep apnea.
Play brain games. My family loves to play card games and my grandmother was the champion amongst us. She lived to be 92 and I attribute some of her cognitive skills (she was sharp as a tack till the end!) to playing cards, solving crosswords and doing puzzles.
Learn a new skill. At the moment I’m learning French and how to trade options in the stock market. Ha, two very different skills! But challenging for me. Learn a language, pick up a new hobby, read a good book.
Change the way you do your activities of daily living (ADL’s). Instead of always combing your hair with your right hand use your left. Switch the way you do things. This will build new neural pathways and give your brain some extra dexterity!
